Issues Families Consider When Beginning the Adoption Process
AGE Ametz has no age restriction for adopting families at the present time. However, placement agencies and international governments have their own rules.
MARITAL STATUS Ametz does not have marital requirements. We work with couples and singles.
ILLNESS While past diagnosis or treatment of a medical or psychiatric illness does not preclude a person from adopting, a doctor’s letter with particulars of the history of the illness, treatment and diagnosis, as well as the doctor’s recommendation will be necessary for the homestudy at Ametz. Adoption placement agencies and/or international governments may require documentation and/or place additional limitations on your options.
PAST ARREST Criminal clearances are run on all prospective adopting Ametz couples and singles. In addition, Ametz requires affidavits regarding a history or allegations of child abuse or neglect, or arrest as part of the homestudy process. For international adoptions, USCIS (formerly INS) requires FBI fingerprint clearances. All arrests appear on these clearances, whether there was a conviction or dismissal of charges was the end result.
RELIGIOUS ISSUES Ametz has no religious requirements or restrictions. We work with families of all religious backgrounds.
ALREADY HAVE CHILDREN Family size does not influence Ametz’s work with a couple or single parent. However, placement agencies, international governments or birth parents may consider this when deciding to place a child in your home.
CANNOT TRAVEL Inability or reluctance to travel limits your adoption options, but will not prevent you from adopting.
JCCA’s Ametz Adoption Program is a resource for families and single people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, at all stages of the adoption process. Ametz homestudies, workshops, support groups, annual conference and professional training institute have been helping to build strong adoptive families in the New York Metropolitan Area for more than 20 years. Ametz offers additional programs for the Jewish Community. JCCA is an authorized adoption agency in New York and New Jersey.
