How do I begin investigating whether adoption is right for my family?
The adoption process starts with asking questions. We encourage you to explore our Resource Center, to attend a "How to Adopt" session or schedule a consultation before you commit to a particular path or process or agency.
Can I explore adoption even if I’m still pursuing infertility treatment?
The Ametz Adoption Program is unique in that we are happy to work with people pursuing both paths to parenthood.
Can I adopt if I’m over forty?
Many people over forty adopt each year, although some adoption placement agencies have age limitations. The Ametz Adoption Program has no age restrictions.
Can I adopt as a single parent?
Single men and women adopt both domestically and internationally.
What are the differences between domestic and international adoptions?
The major differences between domestic and international adoptions relate to the age of the children available for adoption, the availability of medical information, contact with and information about birth parents, and the predictability of the process. Ametz community workshops or individual consultations can give you additional details and help you decide which route is best for you.
Does the Ametz Adoption Program place children for adoption?
No, the Ametz Adoption Program does not place children for adoption but we can advise you throughout the process. We are connected to a national network of adoption agencies and attorneys, so we can help you evaluate your choices and build your family in the most effective way.
How experienced is the Ametz Adoption Program?
Ametz has been working with adoptive families in New York and New Jersey for more than 25 years and it is a program of the Jewish Child Care Association, one of the oldest and most respected comprehensive childcare agencies in New York.
The Ametz Adoption Program is part of Jewish Child Care Association. Does that mean it serves only Jewish families?
The Ametz Adoption Program serves families and single people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, at all stages of the adoption process. We do also offer additional programs for Jewish Families.
Is it possible to adopt an infant or a toddler through foster care?
Such situations are infrequent, but do occur. For information on becoming a foster parent, please contact JCCA Foster Home Services.
What is a homestudy and why do I need one?
Anyone who wishes to adopt must have a homestudy, but at Ametz Adoption Program we believe a homestudy is more than a legal requirement. It’s an opportunity to explore and discuss the route to parenthood that’s right for you.
An Ametz social worker will come to your home to learn more about you and your family. She will then write a summary report used by courts, agencies, attorneys, federal offices, and foreign countries throughout the adoption process. Your Ametz social worker is your advocate. We encourage you to ask lots of questions and discuss all your concerns.
How much will an adoption cost and how long will it take?
Private and independent domestic or international adoptions cost approximately $10,000-$40,000 and are regulated by legal jurisdiction and state and federal statutes, as well as the country of origin for the adoption.
